Halloween Cooking with Dr Oetker

There is nothing Fifi likes more than a bit of cooking, so for a change I made daddy do it with her. Thanks to Dr Oetker who provided her with some Halloween kits this wasn't too daunting for the husband.

They made little iced cakes with special moon and star chocolate sprinkles. These were so yummy I found Fifi pouring them into her mouth at one point. Little mother like daughter.

They also had a go at baking what I have to say were the most delicious biscuits I think have been made from a mix in this house. The Halloween Bat Cookie Mix which comes with a little bat cutter which can be reused:

Finally the boy assisted them in making Halloween apples using the Halloween Apple Decorating kit. This proved a fun treat and actually something that could be adapted for kids parties fairly easily. I cant show you a picture because they ate them before I had a chance to take one!

All in all, a good father- daughter bonding experience with the added bonus of some scrummy food!

Why I REALLY dont want a C-Section

The news that women will be allowed to opt for a C-Section is to me, frankly disturbing. Yes, I have a fear of needles and hospitals and all that entails, so that probably doesn't help. However, I cant help but think that the absolute best outcome if at all possible is to be born naturally and for a mother to allow her body to behave as nature intended. It's not that I am some kind of earth mother, however I cant help but think that it must be better for a child to follow the route they were destined to go along rather than be hoicked out under the glare of bright light bulbs. Unless it is unavoidable.

I am not in anyway undermining those women who have had C-Sections. I commend them as brave, strong individuals. However, I just cannot understand why you would want to go through that by choice rather than medical necessity.

When I had my two children, I found that the experience was varied. With boy there was a degree of medical intervention which left me traumatised to this day. With Fifi the birth was directed by one experienced midwife who was kind, patient and knew how to deal with childbirth. I walked out of the hospital on the same day with my daughter and didn't look back.

That's the thing, if you give birth naturally, you may bear some mental scars but you wont have the physical ones which leave you unable to do many of the daily tasks which you take for granted. Friends of mine who had C-Sections were stuck at home for weeks afterwards, unable to even push the pram. Is it worth it for a day of your life?

Now, I'm not going to be mercenary about this, if I need an emergency C-Section then so be it. However, it is not something that I want. I want to be able to drive my car, push the pram and after all, I have 2 other children who need looking after. I cant flop about on the sofa, I don't have anyone to look after me all day long. I cant even bear to look at the scar from when I had a mole removed.

Why would you opt for an operation unless it was a medical necessity? Seems rather bizarre to me. It also seems odd that in this day and age where I get four midwife appointments throughout my entire pregnancy due to staffing levels and cutbacks, that the money can be found from somewhere to enable people to actually choose this operation. An operation that might not be necessary. Sod the lack of funding for altzheimers drugs, the lack of incubators in Special Care Baby Units and so on. I imagine that most people wont even be considering the impact that their costly operation might have on others needing NHS care. But it's all about principals isn't it.

At the end of the day the most important thing is that mother and baby are safe. I know of at least one person that died following a C-Section. It is not the easy way out. I hope this will be drilled into mothers as they are offered the option and that many keep their options open, leaving the decision to the medical experts rather than the whim of what their favourite celebrity has just done.

The one where we take the kids to Proud Camden...

Myself and the husband used to go to Camden a lot, one of our friends lived there so we could stay over and spend the whole weekend partying and shopping. Its not somewhere where I would necessarily take children out of choice because these days it is incredibly touristy and busy.

However, we have found that it makes a nice day out if you park at Primrose Hill (free of a weekend) and walk through the leafy streets. You can also get some fabulous views of London from there with the Telecom tower and Millennium Wheel clearly sticking out on the horizon. I can picture myself living a Primrose Hill lifestyle; coffee in the local coffee shop, buying my clothes in the Anna boutique and wandering about the hill. Being a north London girl it would be a dream lifestyle really, close enough to London's theatres, museums and galleries for cultural activities, yet still villagey. No wonder it's a favourite location of rock stars.

Anyway this weekends sojourn into the big smoke was because we were invited to try out the new Proud Kids Club. Basically the Proud gallery (and famous burlesque venue) in Camden Stables have started a Kids Club where you can enjoy a meal and the kids have something to do. We thought that might make for a fun day out. Now, I have to say we were promised a Halloween event and although the venue was decked out with scary skeletons there wasn't a great deal of Halloween happening in the kitch restaurant.

We arrived twenty minutes after they were supposed to have started (although ten minutes earlier than we had said) and they weren't set up which was a bit awkward. However, everyone was friendly and helpful and the kids loved exploring the venue, especially the pole dancing booths (lol). The Proud venue is seriously impressive, it has that urban Camden feel about it and is a little oasis of calm in the heart of the frenetic Stables Market.

In terms of the food, we didn't think there was a great deal of choice, especially if you had a vegetarian child, although the portion sizes were impressive for four quid. For adults the menu was quite limited and to be honest, if I was pregnant with my first child there was literally nothing I could have eaten. Since, I'm onto the third and not quite so strict about following guidelines I opted for Nachos with dips and a graze of the hubby's scrumptious pear and fennel salad and the kids burgers. The food proved good value for money, and it was great to be able to eat at a table peacefully in the heart of Camden. We would definitely go back, purely on that basis. I can't tell you about desert, as although it had been promised it wasn't offered, which was a little disappointing because I was banking on getting my main nutrition from a nice pudding...

In terms of kids facilities, somewhere like this is never going to beat one of those pubs with climbing frames etc, but I don't think that's what it is trying to do or be. It's a lovely relaxing venue and our children absolutely loved the Amonzonas swing which frankly, I am lusting after. There were a few other kids toys which they enjoyed playing with and best of all a friendly children's entertainer. In theory, we could have stayed all afternoon and had a few drinks and a much needed rest. All very trendy suburban North Londony. All very nice and relaxing.

We came out and thought that it was actually a really nice place to take the kids for a weekend lunch, they enjoyed it, we felt relaxed and it made a great change. If you are looking for somewhere reasonable to eat in this part of London with children I don't think you will go too far wrong here. Although going on our experience you might be the only people there...

Hexbugs!

With Halloweeen firmly on its its way we were delighted to take delivery of some Zombie Hexbugs and some Nano's. We love Hexbugs in this house and the kids delight in using their Lego to build little mazes and houses for them to run around.

In case you don't know what they are Hexbugs are little micro robotic insect like things which scurry around and have a life of their own. You can see them here:

I have to admit I am surprised at how much my kids love playing with these, it's great because they are quite interactive. We have found that they have unleashed new levels of creativity with specific building projects aimed around constructing new environments to see how they behave. You can also go onto the Internet and register your Hexbug and play some related games. They have proven an interesting way of starting to talk to the children about science and to be honest, just brilliant fun. Daddy pinched one for work where it scurries around his desk proving they are not just for kids.

A word of warning, these little creatures do behave like insects and so if you let one loose in the room make sure all the small holes are blocked up. A friend of ours lost hers under the fridge, quite a faff to move all that to recover it...

Ellos nightwear

I increasingly find myself needing some new pyjamas. The reason for this is twofold, my existing ones are a bit old now (older than both our children) and at 6 months pregant with our third, some of them are a little uncomfortable.

Recently I came across www.ellos.co.uk(I have some free stuff on the way for review purposes), which is an online clothing store from Sweden. Since they're fairly new to the UK, you can be pretty sure that not everyone else you meet is going to be wearing the same clothes.

This goes especially for nightwear of course! I tend to favour pyjama bottoms like these, because they're comfortable and at £19.99 they're not going to break the bank either. Ellos do the usual free returns if you've optimistically misjudged the sizing or the style doesn't look quite as good on you as it does on a model.

Disney Universe- Xbox 360 Review

Greetings once more, its Alex here from Daddacool. The lady wife is busy so I'm making merry on her blog. Muhahaha. Today I'm going to be reviewing  Disney Universe on the Xbox 360.

Traditionally kids videogames have been a bleak affair. Not in terms of design of course, they've always been full of primary colours and catchy tunes but in the implementation. You see, games studios decided that kids weren't very discerning so would be happy playing any sort of rubbish. That must be why a few work colleagues complain that they can't get a game of CoD Modern Warfare because their 11 year olds are monopolising the Xbox 360.

Fortunately Disney Interactive and a few other developers are seeking to address this and actually make kids games with high production values and that are, you know, fun to play. Disney Universe is definitely fun to play, in fact the problem may be letting your kids alone with it long enough so they can play it. It's fun. A lot of fun. But it's also easy enough to play for the average 7 year old. The game is certified 7+ because of the level of violence. It is a violent game but the violence is akin to Wiley Coyote getting beaten senseless in a Loony Toons cartoon rather than someone headshotting you with a sniper rifle. I don't think it will disturb many seven year olds. Under supervision we even let our 4 year old have a go once I'd played it through to make sure it wasn't completely unsuitable.

The game itself has a plot of sorts that sees a virus infecting the computer than runs the Disney Universe, making characters behave all mean to each other. It's up to the player (and his/her playdate friends if you're lucky) to set things right. The game is a third person action adventure game, where your cute little blue player can dress up as a multitude of Disney characters, ranging from the likes of that irritating warthog from the Lion King to Captain Jack Sparrow. Sadly, Woody and Buzz Lightyear aren’t usable from the start, mark my words, there will be tears!

There are several words to quest your way through, collecting coins to unlock things and the action can get quite frenetic. Don't be disappointed if you have to step in and give you children a hand, even if it isn't strictly necessary.

Fully recommended, this is a must have kids games that parents will probably get some guilty pleasure from and at £33 (RRP £39.99) on Amazon at the moment. Disney Universe is released on 28 October.

I wanted to wake up really late...

....but my naughty eyes wouldn't let me. Just another day in our household and another excuse from the boy. Inspired I thought, generally he is quite good at waking up late its Fifi who is the early bird. It doesn't matter for me anyway because I am awake most of the night thinking, worrying, being kicked by the baby. Last nights ponderings ranged from the worry of the moment: why are children's knickers and pants so small or do my kids have big bottoms? to, I wonder if they have managed to keep my former desk at work tidy. In between these thoughts was a brief consideration of what I might do if someone bought the boy that Scooby Doo slime for Christmas. You, know the slimey stuff that gets covered in fluff and ground into the carpets.

Small worries I feel, but I'm quite pleased as for me this is an improvement. It means I have pushed the major worries about life into the background, at least temporarily. The children have worries themselves at the moment, perhaps this is why they are not sleeping. Fifi is concerned because her excessive toe jam removal has lead to the area between her toes getting sore. She is also slightly concerned that Waitrose may remove their little trolleys for Christmas and she wont be able to go around the entire shop grabbing random stuff whilst knocking over old people. The boy is worried he wont be able to wear his Adidas Lightning McQueen jogging bottoms for a while as he has determined they are too long. Oh, to be little.

Review: Bosch Logixx 8 Washing Machine from Appliances Online

I was lucky enough to be asked if I wanted to test the Bosch Logixx 8 washing machine by brilliant on-line appliances company, Appliances Online. We have been really pleased with our existing Bosch appliances and would certainly recommend them to others, however this washing machine is one of the top ones in the range so I am not sure if I would have been able to find the money to purchase it. Now I can see why it costs what it does because you get an almighty machine! I cannot find fault with it. The Eco-logical features mean you select the amount of water you want to use, which cuts down on the water bill, so you'll probably make financial savings long term as well as saving money.

If you  have one of those kitchen/ family rooms then this is the perfect washing machine because it is really really quiet even with the fullest load on the fastest spin cycle. Astonishing. It also has a massive drum which cuts down on the number of loads you have to do. What's more there is none of that 'wedging' stuff in and out of the machine because the door cavity is huge and it opens wide.

I'm totally sold on this, it's a fantastic washing machine I think you would be hard pressed to find better. As for Appliances Online, I was totally impressed by their service. They have also won me over with the fact that they not only provided me with a fairly short delivery time slot (which was impressively fast), but that they delivered over the weekend. A lot of retailers could learn from that and I will be buying from them again in the future!

Have a look at my video review:

Disclosure; I was given this washing machine by appliances online in exchange for the review. I'm very lucky and very happy with it.

Review; Rio DVD

We were lucky enough to attend the premiere of Rio earlier on in the year. The kids loved the film and I reviewed it here. I cant recommend this film highly enough for toddlers, its full of thrills and spills and has a real feel good vibe to it. My kids like the dance sequences in particular which is greast because the DVD we were sent included some bonus sequences of these sequences.

All in all, I think the film is perfect for toddlers and we have already watched in several times. If you want to get a flavour have a look at the video:

You can find some cool games to play here:

Where did all the fun go?

A few weeks ago I noticed a conversation between a couple of people I follow on Twitter. They were moaning the fact that they hadn't been out in the evening for a couple of weeks. I racked my brains, the last time I went out in the evening (with the exception of attending a parent forum thing, a work do and a one evening parenting course) was May 6th. Yes, that's right a good five months ago. The night I finally fell in that I might actually be pregnant.

Since then life has literally been a whirl of working, answering emails, doing DIY, cooking, attending to children, stressing about finances and my job and doing the housework. I think we may have watched some television whilst we were doing this. The hubby probably hasn't even noticed, he has been to the pub with friends, been to see the Belgium Grand Prix and quite a few blogging events. I wonder if we have started leading separate lives. I'm not bitter about this, I'm happy that he is doing stuff and enjoying himself.

The thing is, and I am not trying to make people feel sorry for me, is that I do wonder where all the fun went. I cant honestly remember laughing unconditionally, feeling free, letting go, having fun. I cant remember going out with my husband and not worrying about something. I realise that we will never be able to go out and have a meal without looking at the prices on the menu and worrying whether we can afford it, or wondering if the children are alright. But why does it seem that everyone else can do this? I'm sure some of it is symptomatic of where we live and probably of my age, but I cant help wonder. Am I on the brink of a mid-life crisis? What happened to all the fun, did I use up my quota?

Half Term Craftiness; A few reviews of craft kits

It's getting to the point in half-term where you might need a little bit of additional assistance in entertaining the kids. Sometimes endless finger painting and sticking leaves to paper just doesnt cut it and you need to go out and buy a kit. We were lucky enough to have the chance to test a few kits out over the past few weeks, as far as I can see they are all easily available at the usual retailers such as Argos and Amazon. Here are the verdicts, I hope you find it useful:

Hello Kitty Cool Cardz Design Studio
Suitable for 6 +
When this arrived I was a little bit skeptical that the kids  would enjoy it and so I roped in one of their slightly older friends to do it with them. I have to admit this was partly because I thought it was so fab myself I knew I could get a bit carried away laminating things. I love laminating things…
It’s a really basic idea, basically you get some little cards, stickers, pens and stamps and you design your own cards and then laminate them though a special little machine.  It’s one of those endless activities really.
The children ranging from 2 to 8 year old all enjoyed making their cards. However the excitement of being able to laminate the cards quickly took over and I did notice that they took less and less effort over their designs in their rush to get a laminated card! The 8 year old had absolutely no problems in using the machine, which is sort of like one of those old fashioned credit card payment machines.
All in all I think that although this is a little  bit pricey it’s a great little creative toy which I’m impressed with. We liked the idea and you can use it a fair few times so it represents good value for money.

Aquabeads Spray Station
Suitable for 4 +
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, you can go wrong with Aquabeads. Generally I think they appeal more to little girls than little boys but my little boy who is four and a half loved this set. Basically you select a template and then use a special ‘plopper’ to put the beads in the appropriate place, you then you the little flower head like a shower to spray water onto the beads and set them.
My little boy who is four and a half found it quite hard mustering the patience to sit and put the beads in the appropriate places on the template. I think this is a boy thing, he lacks the concentration of his girl friend who is the same age and who spent ages happily plopping beads into the appropriate place. However, this kit comes into its own with the little flower shower head which sprays the water to set the beads. My boy absolutely loved this feature as as he liked pressing the button to spray the water. I used this as an incentive to get him working on the designs.
What I liked about this craft activity was that it encouraged a bit of thought and dexterity, so although I had to do it with my boy I could see that he was benefiting from doing it. He seemed to like that he got a little creation at the end of it and has set about keeping them to give as Christmas presents to members of the family.
Reasonably priced hours of fun and a classic craft activity, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Charmies Magic Beader
Suitable for 6+
Older friend thought it was her lucky day when she was asked not only to play with my two kids whom she seems to adore, but also to have a go at the Charmies Magic Beader. I don’t know what it is about girls and beads but the thought of making endless bracelets, necklaces, key rings and so forth seems to fill them with absolute joy.
We all sat around the dining room table and had a look at this activity. Unfortunately a slight fight then broke out as it became instantly apparent that it is something that only one person can do really, although they can be ‘assisted’. Therefore I would suggest that either you buy a couple of sets or you make sure that this is a single person activity!
The idea is that you put the beads into the special little compartments of the ‘magic beader’ and this then helps you thread the beads automatically. Of course, it means that you need to encourage your child to take time over choosing beads for their design otherwise the whole activity is done in under five minutes. The finished product is nice and can be used as gifts or kept as a dressing up item in itself.
My testers liked the beads, liked the concept and were quite happy with it. However I felt that it simply didn’t take as much time as I would have liked for an activity, especially at the cost. I reckon this is a good gift, rather than something you would buy yourself to fill the long half term hours…

Have you talked to your kids about alcohol?

Last week I was invited to the launch of Drinkaware's new campaign aimed at helping parents think about when and how to talk to their children about alcohol. I was keen to go along and hear what they had to say even though I suspected my children may be a little bit small to start the dialogue. Interesting though, the speakers there felt that at a young age it's really useful to start empowering children to have confidence in their decision making which has a significant impact later on in their youth.

Did you know that the average age of a child's first alcoholic drink is just under fourteen? I was surprised by this. Evidence also seems to suggest that the earlier children start drinking, the more they will drink and the more frequently they will drink. That gives some food for thought especially as many parents consider the continental approach to alcohol much healthier. What I also found quite surprising is that the biggest influence on a child's attitude to alcohol comes from the home, it's what they observe you doing rather than their peers. Drinkaware suggest that it's best to try and keep childhood an alcohol free zone, something which as somebody who hardly ever drinks, I agree with fully.

There are lots of things you can do to encourage your children to have a good attitude towards alcohol and many simply relate to arming them with information and empowering them with the confidence in their own decisions. I thought the idea of an organised activity on a Saturday and/ or Sunday morning was especially good though as it gives your teenager a good excuse when they are being pressured by their peers: ' no I cant have another alcopop (or whatever they drink) as I have band practice/ football etc. in the morning.'

Another good tip that I have filed away, is to make sure that your teenagers know what to do if they find themselves in the situation where one of their friends has had far too much to drink. The idea of responsibility and keeping their friends safe is absolutely critical. Any amount of alcohol puts kids under increased risk of sexual attack, robbery and so on. If your children know that you are just a phone call away if any situation arises and that you are not going to judge anyone then that's what good parenting is all about.

If there is one thing I learnt from the day, its that I want to make sure my children are educated about the dangers of alcohol and that they feel confident about themselves and their decisions. You can find out more here on the Drinkaware website. This is a topic that is worth discussing with your partner, friends and family and I don't think it's too early to start.

Drinkaware also emailed me some information about free resources they have available which I think could be of interest:

Leaflets

www.drinkaware.co.uk/parents  - the new parents section of the Drinkaware website includes a video where you can shape/practise tricky conversations with a 13 year old about alcohol.  You can also order the parents leaflet from our online shop - https://resources.drinkaware.co.uk/leaflets/Your-kids-alcohol-leaflet If you register you get £85 free credit which could provide 170 parents leaflets.

In:tuition schools programme

Drinkaware's new life skills education programme In:tuition is available at www.intuitionkit.com Schools can register for free access to 10 primary and 11 secondary lessons.  The programme aims to build the esteem, confidence and decision-making skills of students aged 9 to 14 so they can make more informed decisions about a range of issues – including alcohol, sex and relationships, health, etc.  The website has an explanatory video and schools can contactsupport@intuitionkit.com if interested in training or being one of our Drinkaware pilot schools.

Disclosure; travel expenses and an information packed goody bay were provided for me to attend this event.

Vegetable Monsters!

We had a lovely afternoon doing a Halloween themed activity which is actually suitable throughout the year inspired by a project innocent who make those lovely fruit smoothies are doing. Basically the idea is to use fruit and veg to make Veg Monsters and fruity freaks. Its actually a really good idea and enabled me to talk all about fruit and veg with the kids whilst being creative. They loved this and its certainly something that we will be doing again. We used carrots, butternut squash, tomatoes, celery and runner beans.

There are some new innocent magnets in the latest boxes and we used the magnets to name our creations, despite suggestions based on puns like ‘Terry Able’ or ‘Aaaaaaaaaalan', the kids opted for more conventional monster names as you can see below:

Now if you feel inspired innocent are asking people all over the country to share their fruity freaks and veg monsters online, to be in with the chance of winning an exclusive set of innocent Halloween 0-9 number magnets (which all glow in the dark too).

Here are the instructions for the competition:

1) Make your fruity freak or vegetable monster from the spookiest looking fruit or veg you can find
2) Give it a name and use your innocent magnets to spell it out
3) Take a picture of your spooky creation and post it in our scary Halloween gallery www.innocentdrinks.co.uk/fruityfreaksand email myfruitandvegmonster@innocentdrinks.co.uk with your
flickr name and a postal address.
4) The first 1,000 entries win a set of limited edition glow-in-the-dark Halloween 0-9 number magnets (the perfect addition to our alphabet set)
5) When you're done with your monster why not use any leftover veg to make a soup or whizz any fruit up into a smoothie?

Review: Weetabix, Weetakids app

We don't get to trial apps very often despite being offered loads of them because we don't have an iPad. However, on this occasion we were really kindly loaned one so we could have a good go. Once each and everyone of us stopped fighting over who would get to go first we soon realised that the Weetakids game is brilliant, so well thoughtout that even little Fifi at 2 years old grasped the ideas very quickly. Weetakid, is a new adventure game app.

Basically the app takes you to a magical world which Weetakid lives in and you can build different worlds for him.
A happy, lovable creature, the Weetakid character is a distinctive bright yellow chap and lives a rather blissful existence until the Evil Eater, a horrible villain, strikes a fateful blow to Weetakid’s galaxy. The Evil Eater, voiced by Ian Hughes who starred as Irolas in Lord of the Rings, has stripped all the planets in the galaxy of their energy and wildlife to create the most powerful planet of all to rule over.

There are two different sub-games which you venture into from the main hub world: Vertigo, a topsy-turvy world where they will dodge all manner of strange wildlife in pursuit of the Evil Eater and Nova Belta, the volatile asteroid region where only the brave survive. Fifi particularly enjoyed Vertigo, which was perfect for her novice gaming ability. The games aren't easy but do reward the player and are still fun, even if you don't really know what's going on.

The app has a wonderful musical soundtrack which is really catchy, it looks absolutely fantastic. I've certainly never seen anything like it and it is really easy for all different age groups to use and enjoy. The tie in with the cereals might encourage the kids to eat their Weetabix as well. On the hub world there is a mini quiz you can do based on your knowledge of Weetabix. This is informative but also helps you or your kids learn about Weetabix. So all in all I think its a winner. We would certainly recommend it and if we ever get an iPad this is the first thing going on it! The Weetakid game can be played on iPhone, iPad and iPod Touch devices.
The Weetakid app is available to download free from itunes.apple.com - search for Weetakid in the App Store.

Guest Post: The UK’s five funkiest new baby products

One thing you learn when you become a parent is not to buy any expensive baby gear without doing your research. With that in mind, guest blogger and mother of two Tamsin McCahill champions five new baby products which don’t have ‘straight to eBay’ written all over them!

Bugaboo Bee denim
The Bugaboo Bee has always been a popular pram, and it’s easy to see why:  It has super comfy seats, height adjustable handles and can be either parent or child-facing. No wonder it won the Mumsnet Best Award for buggies and pushchairs 2011. But now the celeb fave has had a dark denim makeover, making it even more stylish than before!

Bloom’s ‘Alma Papa’ range of nursery furniture
The rest of your house is full of stylish furniture, why should the nursery be any different? That’s the ethos behind hip baby brand Bloom. The company was set up by four designer dads who found they couldn’t buy any cool furniture for their own kids. A favourite with new parents is the Alma Papa crib - the curved solid wood looks fantastic, the cot folds away when not in use and it also uses Bloom’s signature ‘no tools’ assembly. No more screwdrivers!

Iiamo self warming bottle
Got a fussy bambino who won’t drink cold milk? You’ll find this product seriously useful. Using the natural warming effect of salt and water, this bottle can heat milk to 37C in less than four minutes. Its eye-catching design makes it a major talking point, too. You’ll be the envy of Starbucks!

JJ Cole body support
Newborn babies just look so tiny in car seats, you’re often afraid they won’t be safe. Well here’s a solution: The JJ Cole body support goes in any car seat or stroller to provide extra padding and head support. Plus one side’s made of a snuggly velour fabric and the other of a breathable knit, to keep them cosy in winter and comfy in summer.

Samsung video monitor
OK, so it’s a bit on the pricey side at £149, but what price peace of mind? It has its own digital monitor, but you can also connect it to the TV so you can watch your little one whilst finding out who got kicked off Strictly Come Dancing!

This is a sponsored guest post, I haven't done one before, but I was quite keen to hear what Tamsin thought were the best new products as I have a new baby on the way. I was given some vouchers in return for publishing it. But I do hope you enjoyed it I quite like the idea of the Bloom cot!

Review: Garden Games Fairy Princess Tent

Sometimes you get a chance to review something which you would have absolutely killed for when you were a child and this was one of those opportunities. The Fairy Princess Tent is the most gorgeous little outdoor tent you will come across. Very girly, but evidently (according to my son) appealing to little lads (he liked the flag in particular) the tent is one of those items which now we have, we cant live without.

Due to it being October, myself and the husband decided that in order to test it we would put the tent up in the living room. We are lucky in that we have a big lounge/ dining room so space wasn't an issue.

The tent was easy to put together and really well made. The poles are made from wood and the frame is very rigid, the outside is made from good quality cotton and it all seems to be exceptionally robust. Every visitor to the house has been impressed with the tent, which retails at just under eighty quid. Quite pricey, but actually in my opinion worth every penny.

I have to say that you cant really go wrong with a tent for the kids, it keeps mine amused for hours. In fact, every single cushion in the house is now in the tent, making it like a comfortable little hareem. They have been playing games in there, sitting quietly and having the most hilarious comversations which they think I cant hear from the outside!

In terms of service, the tent arrived really promptly was well packaged and I received lots of emails for tracking purposes. I was really impressed with the service from Garden Games. I will shop with them again and I'm grateful to them for providing me with a little bit of peace whilst the children sit in the tent!

Half Term Films: Zhu Zhu Pets; Quest for Zhu

Recently we have been sent a glut of DVD's to review, not that I'm complaining and the kids love to watch films so its all good! However, there area couple of films which have stood out from the rest, the first one is the Zhu Zhu Pets movie tie in, Quest for Zhu. Both children really enjoyed this film, although I have to admit I was sceptical. It's full of mild peril, drama and is a great story of friendship. There's a great message in the story when the main character realises that she actually already has everything she ever wanted and she doesn't need to go to a magical palace to make her dreams come true. I found this quite useful as it gave me an opportunity to talk to the kids about wanting material stuff all the time.

In summary, the film is probably not for all children, but if you have little ones that like Zhu Zhu Pets (as mine do) and also enjoy a little bit of excitement and drama in a film then this is a surprisingly good one for them. My kids gave it 4 out of 5....

My Fifteen Minutes of Fame with Schwartz Slow Cookers

It's not everyday that you get asked if you would like to star in an advertising viral campaign is it? Being unbelievably busy I was tempted to turn down the chance, but then something said to me, why not, go for it, it will be an experience...

The campaign idea for Schwartz was actually completely perfect for me, the chance to learn how to cook something delicious using a slow cooker and save myself a bit of time. Regular readers will be more than aware that I have absolutely zero time to myself and that i'm driven mad by kids and other demands on my time. I think you'll see in the films, I was a little bit nervous and as @mediocre_mum pointed out I clearly don't know how to chop an onion properly so I really did need the help of Lizzie Betts the professional chef who was sent along to assist me.

Luckily nothing burnt, it all went very smoothly and I had a lovely day. The kids and the hubby have really taken to these Slow Cooker sauces and I must say they do seem to help you make a very quick hearty meal. Our current favourite is the Sausage and Bean one.

Have a little look at the videos here:

The kids whom I don't usually allow to be shown, do look exceptionally cute in the last video. I'm quite pleased with them, although I cant believe how pregnant I actually look! Thanks to the whole team it was a really fun experience.

Finding out about Kelloggs Breakfast Clubs

I was lucky enough to be treated to a lovely spa day by Kelloggs (you know the people who make cornflakes amongst other cereals). It was a chance to meet up with some of my blogging friends who I haven't seen for ages, get a bit of pampering time to myself and find out a little bit more about the brand. As I tend to eat cereals for breakfast everyday and quite often as a snack I was interested to find out a bit more about the brand.

Kelloggs have many strings to their bow, but perhaps best of all is that they use British Wheat and the cereals are made in British factories (in wales and Manchester). I was actually quite surprised to hear this as I associated them with being an American brand. They also told us a bit about their product development which is fascinating, stories of giant coco-pops and the like appearing when they move from kitchen to factory during development. I was quite keen to find out more about what actually is in Kelloggs cereals, especially as I am confused about the issue of sugar in breakfast cereals. If you want to know a bit more this is where you need to go: http://www.kelloggs.co.uk/health/the-truth-about-our-food/

Did you know they also have a philanthropic foundation: the Kelloggs Foundation which does loads of good work that they don't tend to shout about. For the last few years they have been funding Breakfast clubs around the country at various schools, with the lack of government funding available many Breakfast Clubs are closing and so they have decided to start increasing their efforts and do a little bit of campaigining.

We were told all sorts of interesting (and quite shocking) facts....

Children who skip breakfast are:

•more likely to snack on calorie dense products later in the day
•more likely to be obese
•less likely to enjoy school than their peers
•less able to perform well whether at school or at play

Of those not eating breakfast, a worrying third, that’s 325,000, will have no food all morning and won’t eat or drink anything until lunchtime

.

If you’d like more information on the benefits of breakfast, this is worth looking at http://www.breakfastpanel.org/

Now, Kelloggs are actually offering some funding for setting up breakfast clubs which I think are a brilliant idea. Even if you are at home with the kids you might find like I do that they wont eat much. The peer pressure of a breakfast club usually means that they eat and you know that they are set up for the day ahead. A child who has eaten is much less likely to be disruptive and this clearly has a positive impact on the whole class. If you want to find out how they can help your school set up a breakfast club then have a look at the website: www.giveachildabreakfast.org.uk  It's a brilliant campaign and one which has given me a lot of food for thought (excuse the pun). I do hope that I can encourage our primary school to get involved and start one up.

On another note Kelloggs are also bringing out a new breakfast cereal aimed at kids called Mini Max. It comes in original and chocolate flavours. We cant wait to try this, this is the first one they have launched in ages and its been two years in development. What's more, it's actually from fairly local grain which has been grown in East Anglia and Northamptonshire. That cant be a bad thing can it?

V-Tech Kidiminiz Kitten from Cuthberts Toys

We are lucky enough in St Albans to have a brilliant independent toy shop called Cuthberts Toys. It's one of those little gems where you can find a great range of toys. I've bought loads of things in there including our mini-micro scooters which were far cheaper than anywhere else and have proved brilliant. So, when I was asked if I wanted to become one of their team of bloggers trying out some of their stock to make sure that its as good as they think I was more than happy to help!

Fifi was given a V-Tech Kidiminiz Kitten which is suitable for 3 + years, she is two and a half going on on forty and well used to playing with her big brothers toys so I knew it would be perfect for her. I have to admit, as someone who is not brilliant with technology I did have my doubts about setting it up for her but that proved easy.

One of the things she loved doing was watching it dance when she clapped her hands, she joined in with excitement which was so cute to see! Of course, the boy (four and a half) got in on the act and decided that his favourite thing to do was to change all the expressions, which to be honest had me a bit puzzled so I'm glad he could do it. Men are always good with this sort of thing aren't they?

We have had a similar toy to this in the past but it was much smaller and we had two of them so they could talk to each other. I understand that the Kidiminiz do the same thing and it's for this very reason that the boy has requested one for his Christmas list.

I think this is a really great toy for demonstrating to kids that there is so much more to technology than iPad apps and computer games. It's also a good way of encouraging them to explore and play alone, I've been really surprised how much Fifi has used it. She even goes to bed with it on her little shelf! One of the functions is also an alarm clock, so for under fifteen quid its a really good buy. You'd be hard pressed to find a kids alarm clock for cheaper. It's very robust, withstands dropping onto hard floors (I know this) and you can get them in a variety of different animals. We like.

Cuthberts Toys also have an on-line shop, they sell their toys at very reasonable prices and I'm more than happy to support a local business, so do make sure you check them out.
