Sponsored Guest Post: Sending cards doesn't have to be stressful

Todays guest post is by Rahul Mistry who tells us all about how he deals with the ordeal of sorting out cards!

If you’re anything like me, you struggle to find the perfect card for everyone you want to show appreciation for when Christmas time comes around. I could spend all day in the greeting cards section of a store and still not come out with everything that I wanted. It seems like Christmas card selections grow with each passing year, which would ordinarily be a good thing, but it can turn into an ordeal when you start to feel overwhelmed. And this is without me mentioning that I may love the message inside a card but not like the front of it, or vice versa.

This year, I’m going to skip the anxiety, or at least attempt to, by ordering my cards online. I went to Hallmark’s Christmas Cards section yesterday and found a few that you can send to different people. Hallmark lets you personalise cards by changing the text, font and colour, so I just used the same card for several different people and changed the message. You can use the suggestions on the card or come up with an entirely new message, and the personalisation can be done on the front, inside and back of the card. I love it because I don’t have to search for a different card for each person, and I’m not stuck with a message that doesn’t really mean anything for the person I’m sending it to. Plus, it gives you extra room just in case you have trouble fitting everything you want to say into one little space.

I’ll admit that I had never thought of buying greeting cards online before, so I’m also excited that this site can save me a trip to the store. I think this new feature can make sending cards a lot easier, and I’m sure I’ll be using it again. Especially when Valentine’s day rolls around, I’ll be excited to send out cards to my friends and loved ones. I always hate how Valentines Cards are either too mushy or don’t say enough, so it will be extra nice to be able to personalise my own.

Review: Playmobil My Take Along 123 Noah's Ark (set 6765)

When my little boy was tiny I was really pleased to discover that Playmobil did a range of toys especially for under three year olds. Playmobil is just such lovely stuff, really tactile and nicely made. It's great for role playing so it's wonderful to find some that doesn't have all the tiny parts (choking hazards) which the stuff suitable for older kids has. For Playmobil 123 think really solid chunky people and animals with lots of rounded corners. It has all the essence and design class of standard Playmobil and is perfectly compatible with it as well.

As part of our role as Playmobil Playologists Fifi was really kindly gifted this Noahs Ark to test out. As with everything that Fifi does, she tested it to the max. From her hardcore playing I can assure you that Playmobil 123 is the most robust stuff you'll find. We really enjoyed discussing all the different animals and decided that the zebra's were the cutest ones in Playmobil style, although it was a hard choice because the elephants were also pretty cool.

One of the lovely things about the Playmobil Noahs Ark is the little carry handle which  means that the ark is really portable. Fifi enjoyed wandering about the house following me around with the ark in hand, as it meant she had a toy to hand whenever I stopped to do some chores.

I reckon this would make a fabulous Christmas or Christening gift for a girl or a boy. They will get absolutely tons of play out of it and it will last for years and years. I don't need to say anymore do I? If you have a little tot, this is brilliant and they can even take it into the bath as it floats!

The Playmobil Noahs Ark is widely available at the usual toy retailers for between £20 and £30.

Sponsored Post: Compare the Market.com

Last year I made a deal with myself, if I could save £100 on the home insurance I'd use the money to treat the family to a day out I have always tried to do is to find the best deals on our home insurance. I know that this is one area where you can literally save hundreds of pounds fairly easily. One of  the best sites I've found to get a great home insurance deal is Comparethemarket.com At the moment, they have an added incentive to make it really worthwhile signing up with them, you can get a free Meerkat toy. I'm told they are very collectable!

I'm glad I did shop around and look at the policies very carefully using the comparison website because until this year I have never had to make a claim. However, I managed to lose the diamond from my eternity ring and I needed to claim for it on the Home Insurance. Luckily, I had compared all the different policies and managed to get one which covered for accidental loss and so we didn't have to spend a fortune buying a new stone, it was covered.

Anyway, now you know about those Meerkat toys up for grabs i'm surprised you're still even reading...

Fate, Life and Such Stuff

I'm one of those people that had my life mapped out, I had thought through all the steps I would need to take to get myself particular jobs, a certain lifestyle and so on. I'm happiest when I know where I stand, where I am going and what lies ahead. I don't like uncertainty drama, risk.

Those of you who follow this blog will be more than aware then, of the year that I have had. First I find out that I am having a surprise baby, various other things happen and then I get made redundant. It feels a bit like my life imploding. It probably wouldn't be quite so bad if the job I was being made redundant from wasn't at the museum where I used to go as a seven year old child and dream that one day I would find work there. Yes that's right, I managed to work there for ten years and I was working somewhere where I had always wanted to work. Not many people can say that can they?

Sometimes fate throws things at us, I am a firm believer in fate. I do think things happen for a reason. It took us two years to conceive the boy, nearly 9 months Fifi and possibly 3 minutes for this little one wriggling away in my tummy. It must have been meant, I must have been meant to have three children and become a mum who, with a bit of luck, will be able to do a bit of work at home.

I'm worrying still, my redundancy isn't even enough to cover a years worth of re-training. We are hard up as it is, not outwardly as we have a big house, but we have a big mortgage to find every month. I shall be even more frugal with the food purchasing and the grandparents can buy the kids shoes. I'm worried about lots of silly things though, what if the husband goes off and leaves me with three kids and no money now I am reliant on him? What if I turn into some demented washerwoman through lack of chances to mingle with anyone outside my household? What if I end up crying after nearly every single school run and I get terrible depression? Can I deal with THAT much Cbeebies? Will I lose my identity?

Think positive: It no longer matters if a child is sick, I'm here to nurse them. I can participate in school activities. I will be there to help my kids with their homework. I may feel less stressed. I can enjoy seeing my new baby grow up and be there for all of it. I can really indulge in my hobbies, well, sewing and blogging. I can try to make the house presentable and keep it that way. I can try to feed my family properly. The possibilities are endless. Must. Not. Get. Sucked. Into. Twitter.

With the opportunity of a new life presenting itself in front of me, I find myself needing to refresh our house. Maybe its nesting. However, I wake up at night considering the cheapest options for a garage conversion. I mean, I'm sure I will be able to screw some batons to the wall and put plasterboard up whilst my angelic baby sleeps in its moses basket nearby. People are always doing that on Grand Designs aren't they? These thoughts occasionally spiral out of control and I find myself in a frenzied imaginary redecoration/ renovation of the entire house before I return to ground zero. So far the husband has found himself screwing new cupboard doors to the kitchen cabinets. I only measured them 1 cm wrong. That doesn't matter really *ahem*.

Here I am cast adrift in a sea of unknowing. Who knows what my future may bring, where I will be, what will happen. I am trying to feel marginally excited by all the possibilities, but you know what? I'm scared. This is not my natural habitat, I'm a fish out of water. I know what I cant be, I know what I am, but I do not know what might be. This could be the start of something exciting, something fulfilling and something worthwhile. Or then again....

Review: Tumblekins Wooden Toys

It's not often that you can find a toy which will keep a 1 year old,a two year old and a four year old amused but this is one of them. The Tumblekins School Bus is a really basic toy which basically consists of a school bus with two little figures sitting inside it which spin around when you move the bus.

In terms of quality the toy is well made and the fact it's made from wood means you don't have another piece of plastic lying about. The toy seems very robust as it has been thoroughly manhandled in our house over the past couple of weeks and looks as good as new.
.
The simplest things are sometimes the best and I think that in this case in terms of entertainment value that is very true. I've had to break up several squabbles between the kids (my two and my niece) for this toy. I think I need to buy another two for an easy life.

If you fancy getting hold of one, and it would make a pretty good first birthday pressie which would last and last you can find them here: www.brightsparktoys.co.uk

We were gifted the Tumblekin Wooden Toy Bus for the purposes of review

Review: Happy Feet 2 for Xbox 360

I have to admit I don't really know a lot about computer games and I am firmly of the camp where if it says for 8+ on the box I know I won't even have a chance. But saying this, having children has completely retrained me and I can actually give them a good go with the kids!

Happy Feet 2 is the perfect game for a luddite like me, it is so intuitive and simple the boy aged four actually showed me how to play it. He loves it, not only does it have him in fits of laughter, he concentrates, he dances, he simply enjoys it.

The aim is to go around collecting penguins by dancing to the beat and then going to different levels. Whilst it requires hand to eye coordination is as much as you have to tap buttons in time to the rhythm, it doesn't require the sort of fiendish hand to eye coordination that a platform game needs. Your kids wont find themselves giving up after 5 minutes because they can't get the timing for a jump right and keep falling to their death.

There are lots of cutesy moments, and the first time your penguin goes down a slide you will find yourself literally cooing at how sweet it all looks. There's not enough harmlessness in computer games nowadays, everything seems to be about biffing baddies or overtly educational but Happy Feet 2 is one of those genuine harmless but fun games.

Revew: Cambridge Baby

I was contacted by Cambridge Baby and asked if we would like to review something for the boy. I liked the sound of the company so I agreed. This is what they say about themselves... 'Helen and Nick who run the company source only natural-fibre clothing for babies and children.  They specialise in organic Merino wool supplemented with the nicest organic cotton and wool/silk blends, plus  organic Welsh Shetland wool, organic mulberry silk and bamboo.' Having had a look at the site it is full of some wonderful and unusual stuff. Well worth a look.

The boy was sent this Striped Merino Jumper by Lille Barn. Its completely up his street with a large pocket and stripes. In terms of quality, its made from lovely soft wool. I have to admit I have found it a lot harder to wash than most of his usual stuff as I was worried about shrinking it. But on the whole, it has survived in shape much better than I anticipated.

The only issue I have is with the sizing, at four and a half this should fit Boy perfectly. However its not going to last very much longer and I would have said that he could really have done with two sizes bigger to get value for money. Considering that the Boy isn't very big for his age if you do fancy getting one, bear that in mind.

All in all, Cambridge Baby sell some lovely stuff (including school wear) it's well worth checking them out.

Note:
Since I commented about the sizing Helen from Cambridge Baby has measured  the range and agrees, she suggests you give her a ring before purchase so she can measure for you and make sure you have the appropriate size for your child.

Review: Crave Maternity Leggings and Jeans

I was sent a few pieces from the Crave Maternity range to test, this is my final review in the series which I am quite disappointed about because all the pieces have been really nice. Crave provided me with some leggings (a staple of any maternity wardrobe) and also  pair of skinny leg jeans.

Now, I ordered a size 12 and I have to say that (unlike the other clothes I got) these came up tiny, really tiny. So I sent them back and very promptly received a size 16. Maybe I have developed an enormous bottom, it's more than possible. Anyway, the indigo skinny jeans fit perfectly are very comfortable even in my advanced 7 month stage of pregnancy and look smart. They have been a staple of my wardrobe and look great underneath dresses or tunics. The cotton is lovely and soft and the colour hasn't come out at all which is a reassuring sign. I like them and I don't feel like a beached whale whilst wearing them, so that's great!
In terms of the leggings, I have to admit that for the price I thought that although they are well made and soft they are just a bit too see through and baggy. Despite that they are comfortable. I hate to say it but I think you could probably find better value for money elsewhere.

All in all I love the Crave range of maternity wear and I now have my eye on their party dresses. Anyone want to take me to the ball?

Review: Everythings Rosie Toys

Lucky little children as they are Fifi and Boy were sent some Everythings Rosie toys to test. Now, at the risk of sounding like they watch TV loads they both do enjoy the programme. I have started to use the iPlayer to let them select specific appropriate programmes and this seems to work well. There are five shows they ask for time and time again and Everythings Rosie is one of them.We gave Boy Sweet Dreams Rosie & Raggles, he absolutely loves Raggles so we knew he would like it and Fifi had  Ring O Rosie.

Ring O Rosie is a lovely rag doll and Fifi enjoyed re-enacting various stories with her. She also enjoyed putting her in the pushchair and wheeling her about the house. However, she comes with a downside (for us) if you squeeze her hand you get to hear the theme tune. Again and again and again if like Fifi you tend to wander about holding your dolls hands. In fact, after she took her to bed and I was woken up by the theme tune the batteries mysteriously ran out. That said, I think this is the rag doll that Fifi has played with the most out of her entire collection, she clearly loves her. So much so that I found myself buying the same doll for a friends daughters birthday as I think she will get a lot of play out of it. All in all I reckon she is a little bit pricey for what you get compared to some other dolls, but then I do tend to think that you get what you pay for and there are some great offers to be had out there at the moment...
Sweet Dreams Rosie & Raggles was tested by our four year old boy whom I have made a real effort to make sure that he has a range of toys to play with and not just conventional boy toys. I have to admit he does love Lego, Imaginext and other boy toys but he also likes to occasionally wheel around a baby in a pushchair and play with Fifi's Barbies. Sweet Dreams Rosie appealed to him purely because of the TV show link. He would not have been interested otherwise, however he is a keen fan of the show and loves Raggles.

For some reason Sweet Dreams Rosie does not seem quite so loud as Ring O Rosie, the benefit with this toy is that her cheeks light up. For us, this proved totally perfect for the boy who has developed a bit of a fear of the dark and doesn't like going to bed without something to occupy him. Its been a really helpful toy and reminds me of the Gloworm that he had when he was tiny. I think that if your child is a fan of the show and is at a stage where they are a bit apprehensive about bedtime this is a very good toy to put on the Christmas list.

Both toys are available at most major retailers, if your child loves the show they are really worth considering, I think we will be getting a lot of use out of ours...

Idealo.co.uk and Our Stocking Filler Challenge

With Christmas well on its way one of the best ways of saving a few quid is to go to a price comparison website and that's where you'll find Idealo quite handy. You'll find loads of great bargains on there for example this Fisher Price Laugh and Learn Puppy which can be found on the web from £15 to £32.99. I'd be really annoyed if I hadn't looked at Idealo to find the cheaper price!

Now, there is a reason for me picking Idealo as a suggested price comparison site as they challenged me to spend £75 of their cash finding the best stocking filler toys for my kids. This is what I chose in the end:
My kids love Octonauts and to be honest, so do I. Watching the programmes I realise what a great mixture of adventure, thrills and education they are and so I am keen to encourage a bit of role playing.

Fifi loves Baby Annabel and shoes, what more could a little girl want!

Baby Annabell gets a bit grubby quite often so we need a few outfits...
The boy is obsessed with Lego and is desperate for Ninjago. I really hope he likes our choice here, it looks perfect.
When I saw these little cars I knew we had to have them. Fifi and the Boy love the film and these will work brilliantly in their Little People Garage. They also struck me as a perfect stocking filler at a reasonable price.

Not bad for under seventy five quid eh? I'm really pleased with this little lot and I think Fifi's stocking in particular is pretty much full...

I should point out that Idealo.co.uk don't just act as a price comparison site for toys, you can find pretty much everything on there including fashion and electrical stuff. I'm on the hunt for a decent priced oven, as I still nearly two months later, don't have one that works, I have been keeping an eye on the site with a view to getting a pre-Christmas bargain. Keep your fingers crossed for me.

Many thanks to Idealo, their generous gift has really helped us this Christmas and I am sure there are two children who will be thrilled!

Review: Sylvanian Families comes to our house!

Back in the early 1980's I remember playing Sylvanian Families with my little sister. We didn't have much, as it's always been quite pricey, but what we did have was well loved. So when Fifi and Boy were sent The Wedding Celebration Wedding Set and Motorcycle and SideCar featuring George and Mildred Mulberry. I was secretly quite jealous. They were sent these gifts because, low and behold, Sylvanian Families are actually celebrating their 25th Anniversary!

Now, I realise that Fifi is strictly speaking the wrong age for all things Sylvania her brother isn't and she is well used to playing with boys toys. In fact, she doesn't really like baby toys because she is so used to being surrounded by toys aimed at an older age group. Then she is two going on forty, if your child isn't that might be another matter.

Sylvanian Families are great because they don't portray any model of what you should look like, the animals are all stereotypical but they don't have the strange wacky outfits, large chests and platform shoes of many other similar toys aimed at this age group. For that reason alone I think they are wonderful.

When I was little we loved playing wt the rabbit sets and so it was brilliant that The Wedding Celebration Set was the same set of animals. I couldn't help myself but join in and play with them with the kids. It was like being seven again.

I think Sylvanian Families are one of those love or hate toys, this house is definitely in the love camp. Fifi has taken to the little bridesmaid bunny dressed in a blue dress, she walks around with it in her pocket and insists it goes on the shelf above her bed. It wont be long before the toy takes on that familiar well loved feel where the fur has rubbed off. The boy likes his motorbike set and is eyeing up the windmill.

I think it's wonderful that my children have come together to play with a toy of my childhood and one that inspires all sorts of imaginative play. Sylvanian Families is widely available, I reckon your kids would love it too.

Four go to Lake Garda with Thomson Al Fresco

During the summer I showed you some of our holiday pictures from our trip to Altomincio Holiday Park courtesy of Thomson Al Fresco. I thought it was probably about time that I provided you with the  lowdown of the trip. Especially as it's so dark and gloomy out, you might be thinking about organising next years holiday!

It was a trip of highs and lows for the adults, but without doubt, magnificent highs for the children. So much so, that just yesterday I found them both sitting sobbing to themselves on the sofa, when questioned they said it was because they missed Italy so much.

Despite being fairly accomplished travellers we have not been abroad as a family, mainly due to cost but also due to fear at the potential for things to go wrong on an airplane. Well, yes, I was right about that one, as on our return trip the Boy was fairly consistently sick throughout the entire flight thanks to us having to sit at the back (the only seats possible together) where the air pressure was too much for him. On a brighter note Fifi was alright, so I guess it's an individual thing. I would advise you try to get seats in the middle if you have little kids though!

Altmonicio Holiday Park sits south of Lake Garda and about half an hour away from Vernona airport by car, at least it did on our return journey. It took us two hours of driving through a hailstorm to get there with a dodgy Italian map. NOTE TO ALL: Make sure you either have sat nav or a decent map purchased prior to the trip before you attempt a holiday like this.

On arriving at Altomincio I was struck by two things; First the disused industrial chimney in the distance. Secondly, how much it reminded me from a scene from Dirty Dancing. It's quite a high density site with lots of little park homes clustered around play areas. Brilliantly safe for the kids, as there are no cars, but not so fantastic in terms of night-time noise during peak season. In fact, I didn't actually manage a single nights sleep thanks to a screaming baby next door. Sob.

Our Thomson rep helpfully assisted us with our bags and showed us to our little home. The children fell in love with it instantly and worked out which beds they wanted. Being used to luxuries, I was a little skeptical, the husband was downright shocked to discover that there was no television. No television, how would we cope?

Well, when it's not raining, Altomincio is a fab place to be. There is a great gelateria which sells the most scrumptious ice-creams, I recommend the cherry one, a bar and without question one of the best toddler swimming pools I have come across (alongside 2 other pools- one for serious swimming). The pool is about 30 cm deep and is constructed from soft rubber which helps prevent nasty accidents. At the centre of the pool is a giant whales head, complete with slide, areas to sun yourself and a tunnel to crawl through. It's also a great platform for squirting everyone in range with your water gun as Fifi discovered. For slightly older kids and adults there is a couple of big slides which are great fun. As the pool is quite large there is quite a big circumference for sun-loungers, so provided you get there at a reasonable time (or later in the day) you can be fairly assured of a front row seat from which to watch all of this.

For the children the high-light was the activities provided by the Young Friends, this is the campsite kids club. They have an indoor area for crafts and a bouncy castle and each night, and a certain parts of the day at the pool, they hold a mini-disco. The kids absolutely loved this, it was the highlight of their day and we even ended up buying the CD.

In terms of the area, Lake Garda has a lot to offer for families and although I have to admit the holiday was neither as cultured or as beachy as I would have liked, it was entertaining. We took a day trip to Sirmione which is one of the jewels of Lake Garda and former home to Maria Callas. The castle was great fun to explore, the Roman ruins a marvel and if you get the chance to do it I would thorough recommend a boat trip around the perimeter of the town. This was really fabulous.

The local town of Peschiera del Garda was also rather beautiful and we found the most wonderful restaurant to have lunch, a treat which broke the bank but changed the holiday for me. The area also has a few theme parks, cantinas for wine fans and of course the Lake itself on which to take boat trips. Unfortunately due to circumstance we couldn't afford to do any of these, but they do come highly recommended.

In essence, the holiday itself was primarily the for the kids and I am not going to mislead you, I feel like I need a holiday to recover. The children had a magnificent time, it was a total adventure for them and they are begging me to book it again for next year. For me, there were a few niggles with the accommodation, most of which were sorted and I would not like to visit again during Peak Time as the parking was exceptionally difficult. The whole experience has made me realise that it is possible to travel abroad with a couple of toddlers and survive, in fact even have a reasonably  good time. I'd recommend Altomincio if your children are little water babies. The pool is so safe and clean that provided you get yourself a good book and make sure the hubby has packed his swimming trunks you could spend your entire holiday on the park. Which makes it great value.

For the purposes of this trip we were provided with flights, accommodation and some of the car-hire costs.

Review: Crave Maternity Jersey Tunic

It's really worthwhile investing in some good basic clothes from the minute you discover you are pregnant. Although finding reasonable ones can be easier said than done. Luckily I was offered the chance to review a few items from the Crave Maternity Autumn/ Winter collection. I picked their Blue Jersey Tunic.

The tunic arrived promptly and at first glance I was a little bit worried it wouldn't fit. I couldn't have been more wrong as it fits in all the right places and skims over the bump nicely. It's really great quality, made from the softest jersey and very well made. I have washed it several times and it looks good as new each time and as an added bonus- it doesn't need ironing!

The Crave Maternity Tunic has become a staple of my wardrobe, I think its well worth the investment. I feel smart but not over dressed and comfortable. One happy pregnant lady.

Have a little look at their maternity wear, at the moment there are some lovely party dresses and they also offer clothes rental- what a great idea!

Review: Hi-Tec St Mortiz 200 snow boots- preparing for winter!

It's not often that I get something posted to me which is for me. I was thrilled when Hi-Tec offered to send me a winter survival pack (no strings attached)! I couldn't believe my luck when these lovely St Mortiz 200 snow boots appeared with some fab walking socks. What more could a heavily pregnant woman need with the potential of snow on the way.

I've only discovered the joy of snow boots in recent years, but they do make such a difference. Much, much better than a pair of wellys and really worth the investment in my opinion. Now, these Hi-Tec St Moritz 200 Snow boots meet all my criteria and more because unlike the snow boots I have, they are comfy like my walking boots and very trendy! What's more, the fur lining has Thinsulate technology which makes them really snug and warm. Just brilliant. Even if these prove a bit pricey for you I would suggest a pair of snow boots as an essential given the amount of snow we have had in the UK over the past few years...

If I have tempted you have a look at the Hi-Tec website, i'm a total sucker for outdoors stuff and if you are too, then a visit to the website is certainly going to cost you a few quid, as it's chock full of some great stuff. You can also find out some more technical information about the boots here.

Review: Uki - its ideal for preschoolers!

Fifi is a big fan of Show Me Show Me on Cbeebies and she was lucky enough to be sent an Uki DVD and soft toy. Fans of the show will know that Uki is a lovely little animated character that has a slot on the show. Uki has lots of gentle adventures and is beautifully animated. There are several things I like about the show, the lack of language which encourages Fifi to discuss what is happening, the music and the animation stand out in particular. I think its quite refreshing to see something like this and it reminds me of things I watched as a child.

Uki is a very good programme for calming toddlers down as its so calm.  It's humorous and there are no male or female characters, they are what they are. This is refreshing. The DVD would make a great gift for any pre-schooler and it wont drive you mad, I know I have watched it twenty million times already!

I don't have an iPhone so I haven't checked them out, but I am told there are a series of simple apps which have been specifically developed for 1- 4 year olds and act as a tool to develop pre-school skills. It might be worth having a look at them.

Whatever you do check out the website it is really wonderful!

Charity Guest Post: Dr. Claire Kehoe, Expert Nutritionist at Tescodiets.com

Today is World Diabetes Day – a day dedicated to raising awareness of the growing problem of diabetes – a condition which causes more deaths than breast and prostate cancer combined.

Though this is a fearful notion, it is important to remember that 90% of known diabetes cases are Type 2, which for the most part is preventable and controllable through diet and lifestyle changes.

This year, Tesco Diets has launched a joint initiative with Diabetes UK called “lbs for £s”, which aims to turn the nation’s weight-loss into £100,000 for charity. For every pound in weight lost (by following a Tesco Diet plan) one pound (£) will be donated to Diabetes UK and Diabetes Ireland.

As those who are overweight are more at risk of developing Type 2 diabetes, the best preventative measure comes in the form of a healthy eating regime. Why not give Tesco Diets a go?

Simply making small changes to your portion sizes, or your exercise regime, and substituting unhealthy foods for less fatty alternatives can make a big difference.

For a healthier Christmas, try the following tips:
  • Remove the skin from your turkey - this is the fattiest part of the bird
  • Instead of butter, add milk and some fresh parsley to mashed potatoes
  • Have a fruit based stuffing rather than a pork one
  • Serve steamed vegetables, and flavour with fresh herbs or spices rather than butter or salt
  • Go easy on the alcohol (no more than 3-4 units a day for men and a max of 2-3 units a day for women)
  • Don’t let yourself get over-full; eat slowly and chew your food properly.  Take breaks throughout the meal and give your brain time to catch up with your stomach.

Swap this for that!
·         Swap a pint of beer for a medium glass of red wine and save 60 calories
·         Swap 25g of chocolate for a Clementine and save 88 calories
·         Swap a mince pie for a baked apple and save 90 calories
·         Swap a slice of Christmas cake (80g) for a Mr Kipling festive bakewell tart and you will save 76 calories and 26 grams of sugar
·         Instead of a dollop of sherry trifle, have fresh fruit salad with 1 tablespoon of cream and save 200 calories and 16g of fat.

Helping Boys to Learn at School

One of the most challenging things I have noticed with  having a boy is that they learnt differently to girls. They do most things differently to little girls. I am amazed with the difference really. Anyway, one of the things I have noticed is how differently they learn to girls and therefore I have had to ask lots of people and do lots and lots of reading in order to understand how to get the boy on the right track. The one that doesn't involve endless games on the Wii and watching films.

My most recent worry is that he is getting behind with his literacy skills. To my mind one of his main barriers is the teaching of phonics which doesn't seem to take into account his verbal dyspraxia which means he cant say some of the sounds and letters. Despite my best efforts to explain this I seem to be getting nowhere. In terms of reading, the boy gets sent home with books without words and with the best intention in the world they are boring for him. He 'reads' us comic books at home; Tin, Tin, Star Wars and so forth, so a 4 page story about a dog chasing a duck in the park isn't going to cut it with him. Far too babyish and uninspiring. I've mentioned this and still they keep coming home, pointless.

Talking to other mums via Twitter it appears that there is a range of early reading books which are specifically designed for boys: Project X by Oxford Reading Tree. They have proved a turning point for the boy, he will happily sit down with me and work through four stories at a time, sounding out the letters and blending them to make words. Why is it too difficult for them to do this sort of thing at school?  I don't understand why they don't have these books available. The website also provides some really useful information about boys and literacy including a video with some tips which I found exceptionally useful.

The other turning point, at least at home has been the discovery of interactive books on the computer. The boy has to do The Bug Club as part of his homework and this has proved really enjoyable for him. He can use a touch pad mouse and identify lots of letters on the keyboard, its a turning point for him. I'm currently searching out lots of similar reading programmes for him.

So following on from my discovery that Top Trumps are the way to get boys to learn numbers I now know how to get boys interested in reading and writing. I think I now realise that much of the reading, writing and numeracy which I expected to be taught in school is actually something you need to teach at home. It surprises me as I though that was what they went to school for, but it seems the social aspects are the main thing. Armed with this information I know what to do with my other children and to be honest I think Fifi will be reading before she goes to nursery as she is keen to join in with everything the boy does.

Take this as a word of advice, from my experience if you have a boy then find ways to encourage letter and number recognition before they get to school. I hope its not a case of once behind, always behind but I think we are making progress. I just feel sorry for children whose parents don't have the time or inclination to assist them. There is something fundamentally wrong.

Review: Ladybird Childrens Clothing at Littlewoods

Fifi is a tomboy, there I have said it. We have to buy pink versions of boys clothes, or she just wears her brothers cast offs instead of her vast girly wardrobe. Grump. Anyway, she was asked to pick a coat from the Ladybird range at Littlewoods on line and I steered her towards this gorgeous coat. I tried and tried to get her to wear it because frankly from the moment it arrived I LOVED IT. Its well made, good quality and classic. I have used all of my feminine guile to get her to wear it. On its first outing she received 4 compliments, 3 from strangers. Now I cant get it off her. I wish they made them in my size!

The boy chose this natty little duffle coat with red check lining. He admitted to feeling apprehensive about doing the buttons up. The anxieties little boys have are completely alien to me. I explained that he didn't need to do them up as there is a zip and he could practise with the buttons at home. Once this issue had been dealt with he was more than happy with his new coat and keeps  rushing upstairs to look at himself in the mirror. Again, the quality and sizing are great.

I have always thought Ladybird make some excellent children's clothing, it's great quality, hard wearing, good value and properly sized, so it lasts. It's really worth checking out the clothes, I've seen a lovely little Christmas outfit for Fifi which I have my eye on.

Review: Crave Maternity, Blue Drape Jumper Dress

Crave maternity make some brilliant maternity wear and they very kindly sent me a selection of  their range to try out and top of the pile was their Blue Drape Jumper Dress. From the moment I saw it I thought it was perfect, exactly the sort of thing I would normally wear and perfect for this time of year.

The dress is 50% merno wool and 50% acrylic which means that it feels wonderfully soft and exceptionally good quality. I have washed it a couple of times and it looks as good as new. In terms of fit, I was sent a medium (I'm a 12/14) and it fits fairly well. This is a smart day dress and it's proved a really versatile piece in my wardrobe as at can be worn with tights, or with jeans or as a jumper.

If you are pregnant and looking for a maternity dress check them out!

Review: Barefoot Books World Atlas by Nick Crane and David Dean

One of the essential book purchases for any child is a world atlas, yet it is exceptionally hard to find one which meets all the criteria. The Barefoot Books World Atlas  meets all my criteria, most notably in that it is a beautiful book which captures the imagination of adults and children.I have enjoyed reading it as much as the kids have liked looking through it with me

My children had to be very carefully supervised with this book, but then its always best to read an atlas with them. We loved exploring the maps, talking about the different countries and using the brilliant illustrations by David Dean as a starting point for discussing things. At under fifteen pounds (depending where you buy it) I think its a great price and really good quality. A perfect gift for a child.

Barefoot books have their own blog and you can find out all about the launch of the atlas here. It's worth keeping an eye on their site as they often have some brilliant events in their store in Oxford. I think they make some lovely books and I have my eye on a few for Christmas for my kids. You can buy the atlas here and have a look at some of the other wonderful tiles they produce.
