Book Review: Ben and Penny in ‘Lights Out!’ by Geoffrey Hayes

One of the things which is so frustrating for the boy with regards to his reading is the lack of books which really appeal to him to read himself. He loves stories and is quite happy for me to read them, but is clearly a big fan of comics (like his dad) and its really quite hard to find comic books which are genuinely age appropriate. Any parent readers of Spiderman magazine will be able to empathise with this as I always wonder if the comic strips in there are actually appropriate for 5 and 6 year olds…

Although new to me, Benny and Penny is  apparently a really popular award wining comic book series, its even been awarded a Theodor Seuss Geisel Award. They are basically comic book strips aimed at 4+ year olds with fab stories and really sweet illustrations.

I spent a little while looking at “lights Out’ with Fifi and Boy, we discussed the story generally and talked about the illustrations. Although its actually a really readable narrative which is unusual for comic strips, I wanted to encourage Boy to read it himself. He is fascinated by this story, partly because Benny and Penny are a bit like him and his sister and partly because it involved torches, the dark, spooky things and a pirate hat. He seems quite keen to read through himself which is very unusual as reading doesn’t come easily to him and usually he is not prepared to practice. The vocab used is perfect for this age group, using a lot of the 100 high frequency words they are encouraged to learn. I strongly approve!

Benny and Penny childrens graphic novels are a real find. They are genuinely lovely and would make an ideal gift for someone or are perfect for someone who is normally  a ‘less interested’ reader. The illustrations are also quite inspirational, soft, vintage and perfect.
