Squashies! Just like when we were kids. But better…

Growing up in the late 1970’s and 1980’s there are some things that bring back such strong happy memories that I cant resist buying Love Hearts and Parma Violets and Refresher lollies when I see them. In fact, its the law, all children need to be allowed to try these sweets! So when I was invited to a 1980’s party at the Bethnal Green Museum of Childhood to celebrate the launch of Squashies which are little squashy gum versions of the sweets I couldn’t have been invited to a more perfect event.

There was cake, endless sweets, pass the parcel, face-painting and a fab museum to explore. Frankly, it couldn’t have been better.

My children have clearly never been anywhere where they are allowed to take as many sweets as they like. Saturday is sweet day in  our house, we have rigorously enforced sweetie jars and only an accident will result in breaking the rule. When confronted with endless supplies of sweets to sample they were bewildered. ‘Take a carrier bag full kids, it’s OK!’ Said the PR team. The children took two each. So, I made up for it by stuffing Parma Violets into my mouth at a rate of knots. I was to live to regret this when I was trailing around Ikea later in the day buzzing…

Ned enjoyed the Squashies bean bags at the party!

Refreshers Squashies are VERY yummy

I do get excited by sweets, I LOVE sweets so it was great to see some of my favourite sweets made into gummy versions which are ideal for the car. However, I also saw a sneak preview of some new stuff coming out for valentines day. Would you believe 150 million rolls of Love Hearts were sold last year? Clearly popular! If you like quirky tins you’ll be dashing out to get one of the 100,000 vintage style tins of mini loves hearts. There are loads of other Love Heart gifts available on line at www.lovehearts.com where if you type in ‘LOVE15’ you’ll get 15% off (until 13th Feb 2012)

Thank you Swizzel-Matlot it was fab to hear that you are still a family business, lovely to see all my favourite childhood sweets are still going strong and we had one of the most memorable days of the year.
