Book Review: Bear, Bird and Frog by Gwen Millard

2nd December 2013 No Comments

Bear and Bird are two best friends but when frog gets in on the act for a day out Bird isn’t sure how he feels. This is a classic simple story about friendship and sharing and for us, and came at a perfect time. There seem to be perpetual issues about children having one ‘special’ friend when another child comes along to join in the fun and then there are three. Books such as this are useful subtle ways of talking about the issues with children and I always find them helpful.

Gwen Millard is a brilliant illustrator and she has illustrated several picture books including Beasties and The Bog Baby which one the Booktrust Early Years Award. I really love her depiction of Bird in this book, somehow just with the positioning of his eye she manages to capture that slightly ‘nose out of joint’ feeling.

Last night I got the husband to read this to the children as a bedtime story and he said that they responded in a way which was slightly different to the normal run of the mill books and it stimulated a bit of bedtime conversation about friendship. When I joined them they were all happily in discussions about various things which had happened throughout the week. I love it when that happens, especially when I’m not there to be the catalyst to the conversation.

If you want to find out a little bit more have a look at Gwen Millward’s page on the Egmont website. The paperback isn’t out yet, but you can get hold of a hardcopy of the book here
