As a Londoner I’m really keen to make sure that my children have a good awareness of all the landmarks of their capital city and they have an understanding of its geography. I’m a keen purchaser of all books about London and I’ve found that the Tate Modern and the Museum of Childhood Bookshops are little goldmines to plunder in this respect. Books about London are brilliant because of the familiarity of places and the opportunity for additional activities. Many a weekend trip or school holiday has been filled with an activity based around a particular London based book and they have really helped spark the children imagination.
Campbell Books have published a little gem with their large card book Hello London and a couple of associated Buggy Buddies: London Taxi and London Bus all by Marion Billet. We were sent copies to have a look at and to be honest there was a little bit of a fight as to which person got to read them first. Im talking about everyone from little Ned who is 2 (they were meant for him), the 4 year old, 6 year old and me. Clearly a winner then!
Hello London is a great interactive book with a push, pull, slide feature on each page. You go on a journey thorugh London and see Tower Bridge, the Tube and the Lodnon Eye amongst other things. We love this book, there is loads to see and discuss in the illustrations and both the text and illustrations are perfectly pitched at pre-schoolers. Little Ned loved the Tube train pages in particular as he really enjoys going on the tube. He can now recognise a soldier and Big Ben and we’ve only read it over a few days. I cant speak highly enough of this book, quite simply, its brilliant.
The associated buggy buddies are also really good, featuring landmarks from across the city illustrated in a child friendly manner. I must admit to being amused as Ned shouts ‘Taxi’ at the top of his voice as he reads it in the buggy.
Lucky readers of Being a Mummy have a chance to win one of each of these books. Just leave a comment telling me which your favourite London landmark is and crucially which book you’d like to win: Hello London, Buggy Buddies London Taxi or Buggy Buddies London Bus.
