One of the first things I liked about this book was the cover, as a result out of all the books I’ve been sent recently to look at I thought I’d read this one first. I think the cover of books is so important they really do make the difference as to whether you chose to read a book or not.
Amy & Matthew is the story of two young adults who fall in love, and how they realise they are in love. What makes it such an interesting and poignant read is that Amy suffers from Cerebral Palsy and Matthew has OCD brought on as a result of his father leaving. It charts Amy and Matthew’s final year at school, where Matthew is employed to assist Amy in her daily activities, through their prom, Matthews first experience of work and Amy’s first few months at university. There are some unpredictable twists along the way.
I enjoyed this book immensely, much more than I thought i would initially. Although its clearly American there is a lot in it that young readers can identify with. I also felt that Amy’s cerebral palsy was dealt with magnificently and I really felt like I have more of an insight into people who have it, something which I think is very important to teach. I think its very important to encourage young adults to read books which tackle unusual relationships and teach you that although everyone is different, ultimately people are all the same. That its not necessarily those people who you think have the biggest problems in life are the ones that do.
I’d suggest that this is a perfect read for young adults and anyone above that age who enjoys a bit of teen romance. It’s opened my eyes to a whole new genre of books. Thank you Cammie McGovern.
