Book Review: Here I am – Story by Patti Kim and Pictures by Sonia Sanchez

Here I am is a brilliant picture book on a number of different levels; it is a picture book that celebrates diversity and how a child might feel to move far from home. It also uses illustrations brilliantly to tell that story without words which makes it accessible to a really wide range of children. It also means that older children can use it to tell their own story, in other words it could be used at home or school to help with literacy.

I’ve already used this book a few times with the kids as I like to use books to get them to write their own stories. This one is interesting in that the story is quite clearly threaded through the images but you can interpret it based on your own experiences of situations which means that it can be quite insightful when used appropriately.

This is one of those books that has the power to educate and help people at the same time. Its ideal for the classroom or for childminders. Its well worth getting hold of if you like to keep your children’s bookshelves both diverse and insightful.

I bought this book for my children for Christmas! My eldest son and daughter, in particular, love to write stories so I thought it would inspire them too. This is the third good review of this book I have read recently! I will also be reading it to my younger two too!
