Book Review: Pom Pom Gets the Grumps Written and illustrated by Sophy Henn

7th February 2015 No Comments

Pom Pom Gets the Grumps is an absolutely delightful picture book by the wonderful Sophy Henn who also wrote and illustrated Where Bear? Which we reviewed last year. In this book Pom Pom a hilariously cute little Panda, wakes up on the wrong side of the bed and spends the day in a grumpy mood.

This is a brilliant book as it perfectly captures what it is to be grumpy and therefore will appeal to any adults reading it as well as their children. Being grumpy is one of those really identifiable emotions both for the reader/ listener themselves but also an emotion which toddlers can understand easily. Pom Pom has such an expressive face and body language you can’t fail to see what mood he is in. There are surprisingly few books about those days when you wake up in a bad mood for no real reason so this makes a welcome change.

The story is simple but well written and not too wordy, a problem which I’ve started to notice in quite a few of the latest picture books I’ve been sent. The story here allows for plenty of discussion and a chance to savour the environments that Pom Pom finds himself in.  The other brilliant aspect of this book is the artwork which is contemporary and attractive, a real visual joy.

I loved this book so much I actually Facebooked a few of the pages to my friends so they could comment. It really captured the essence of my eldest boy somehow, and there are very few books which can manage to do that.

You really need this book on your shelves, its bought us a lot of fun and empathy and I can’t recommend it highly enough. You can find out everything you need to know here on the Penguin Books website. The book came out on 5th February so you can order it now!
