This time last year I was thrilled to be invited to the Product of the Year awards which is the annual award for the most innovative products on offer in the UK as voted by 10,000 consumers. Unfortunately I wasn’t able to make it this year but i’m told it was an amazing evening. Like last year the award ceremony was held at Number 8 Northumberland Avenue in London’s West End and was hosted by comedian and actor Miles Jupp and with entertainment from X Factor’s Sam Bailey. The evening was attended by some of the biggest manufacturers in the business, including Procter & Gamble, GlaxoSmithKline, Mars, Tesco, Asda, Unilever, Johnson & Johnsons and Britivic. This illustrates the breadth and quality of the competition.
There were winners across 43 different categories and a new technology category with the Acer Iconia One 7 tablet coming out top. Voters heralded the device’s features which allow user to enjoy games, apps and moments on the go, while still priced at under £100.
Mike Nolan, CEO at Product of the Year said: “Innovation comes in many forms and at Product of the Year we’ve seen the FMCG sector pushing the boundaries of function, design and packaging further than ever for 2015. However, building trust in new products is vital to success. The seal of approval truly does set winners apart in a crowded market place and consumers report that they are 86% more likely to buy a winning item. This badge of trust leads Product of the Year winners across the globe to report more than a 10-15% average sales increase following their win.”
We were lucky enough to get sent a goody bag so we could try out some of the products for ourselves. For us Robinson’s SQUASH’D, a portable pack of super concentrated squash came out top. I don’t let the kids drink fruit juice normally because of the sugar and because I don’t like bulky bottles clogging up my worktops. However, this is great as its no added sugar and also is a tiny, tiny bottle which provides 20 drinks. I think this would be perfect if you had a picky child and needed to take a drink out with you. Of course it also means that you can convert restaurant tap water to squash for the kids when you are out, saving a potential fortune!
Another fantastic product was the Flash Magic Eraser, a re-useable, all in one, multi-surface stain remover which won the household cleaning award. This has worked miracles in my kitchen where the grout has got tea stained, it also removed some crayon from our paintwork which is a first for me.
For breakfast we have been enjoying Weetabix banana. This is normal Weetabix which has been cunningly flavoured banana. For some reason this appealed to my eldest, a seven year old who usually refuses to eat cereals. For that reason alone I salute Weetabix. I should also say that the husband found Weetabix On The Go Breakfast Drink very handy for mornings when he is running late for work.
One of my main bugbears is that amount of clutter that we have in our bathroom, i’m endlessly clearing out bottles which have been 90% used and I always feel guilty about the waste but I cant live with the mess. To that end I’ve spent the past year trying to find really good all in one shampoo and conditioners, I’m looking forward to trying out Clairol’s 5in1 Camomile shampoo which one the award for best shampoo.
If you’d like to win a selection of the Products of the Year I have some to give away to one lucky reader. All you need to do is enter this simple rafflecopter and tell me what your favourite domestic product is.
