Book Review: The First Case by Ulf Nilsson

Detective GordonGecko Press produce some special children’s books, printed on lovely paper and well thought about each and every one I’ve seen would make a great present which a child would love to keep.

The First Case tells the story of Chief Detective Gordon feared by all criminals for his crime solving abilities. In the book his friend a young mouse called Buffy helps him out because in reality he prefers a cup of tea and someone needs to find who has been stealing the squirrels nuts. Its a lovely book which I think would appeal to readers aged 7+ (Year 3 and above) as although the text is quite complicated the chapters are quite short making it an excellent bedtime read, at least according to my seven year old!

The lovely thing about this book is the wonderful illustrations by Gitte Spee, they serve to break up and illustrate the text well which makes the book more of an appealing read to a reluctant reader.

This is the ideal book for fussy little readers who like books which are a little bit different to usual, the quality of the paper, the illustrations and the story feel different and this really appealed to my little boy who is very picky about what he reads. His verdict was that it was good and he would recommend it to his friends, that is high praise indeed!

I’ve discovered a website with some brilliant activities related to the book. Check these out!

If you’d like to find out more you can via the Gecko Press website and you can purchase it in the UK from Amazon
