The King and the Sea is a beautifully produced picture book from Gecko Press who specialise in English versions of good books from well established international authors and illustrators.
This is a book of absolutely beautifully illustrated extremely short stories. In each story is a little point of discussion as the king doesn’t necessarily get his own way. Its a brilliant book on lots of levels, not least in that its one of those rare children’s books which works equally as an adults book as a child’s book. I must admit, I think it works better as an adult read to dip into and ponder. However, I have over the course of the past month read the stories randomly with the children and used them as inspiration for quiet family calm time to think about things and discuss the world.
The King and the Sea is the first children’s book I’ve read in a long time where I’ve thought that I would like it as a gift myself. A rare gem amongst children’s books and one which would remain on a bookcase for many years.
