Recently we have been travelling more frequently by train as we realised what great value Friends and Family Railcards are if you are a family of five. For us, it means we can usually travel somewhere more cheaply than if we had all piled into the car and paid for petrol and parking.

There is a downside to this though, after a while the children do get a bit bored and the novelty of train travel can wear off quite quickly. I find this bit especially stressful because i’m acutely aware that other travellers might not find my children’s endless questioning quite as fascinating as I do. Recent gems include: Can you explain rabbit evolution to me and why is the sky blue for only some parts of the day? Both presenting the challenge of explaining complex science in KeyStage 1 and Foundation Stage terms.

I’m always on the lookout for new little gems which will amuse and entertain for a short while and which don’t necessarily require the use of modern day technology whilst out and about. TransPennine Express have clearly been thinking along the same lines as they have come up with some fab little kids travel games which you can print out before you go on a long journey. You’ll find them all at the link above, our favourite is train window bingo which is frankly genius and requires printing out for every single journey. Don’t worry if you forget to print, you can of course also view them using your smart phone if you trust the kids with it…
