Rain is one of those books that you will enjoy having on your children’s bookshelf from the age of about 2 through to at least 5 years old. Its a New York Times best illustrated book and A School Library Journal Best Book of the year.
The book is set in the savannah and tells the coming of a storm, what happens and the after effects. Packed with bright visual illustrations which just feel right for the text it really is a joy to read to the children. More than that though, without realising it the children will become familiar with the types of animals found in that environment and learn a little bit about the natural world.
One of the things which I really like in children’s picture books is the use of very descriptive language. Mainly because it can have such an impact on a young child’s vocabulary. Rain does fulfil this criteria brilliantly because the animals have to describe the rain using their senses.
This is a lovely book which may well become a future classic.
