The New Year is always a time when you start thinking about change. I’ve been decluttering for the past couple of years, slowly but surely, but I’m considering going down the Marie Kondo route because progress is so slow. The house seems to get smaller each year that passes as the children get bigger. I’ve been given some great tips on how to create more room in your home and I thought they were so helpful that i’d post them here for you:
Is your home starting to feel too small? Perhaps your family has grown and you need an extra bedroom, or your wardrobe is bursting at the seams and you could do with a dressing room? Whatever the reason for needing more space in your home, moving definitely isn’t your only option.
If you are perfectly happy in your current home and the thought of going through the moving process sends a cold shiver down your spine, here are a few ways you could create more room in your own home this year:
Throw out the rubbish
Firstly, you need to have a huge sort out. Our homes are full of things that we don’t need and these are taking up the space that could be used for something you really do need. This could be quite a big task, so take it a room at the time and sort all your items into piles – including the items that can’t go anywhere but the bin and those that could be donated to charity.
One man’s trash is another man’s treasure
Not everything needs to be thrown away! Just because you don’t want it, doesn’t mean it isn’t exactly what someone else is looking for! You could either hold a car boot sale or list the items on eBay or Freeads? This way you also earn a few pennies on your old items, which can be put towards new items!
Storage in your home…
The extra money you made selling your old items can be put towards new storage and organisers for around the home. Giving everything a ‘home’ within your house is the perfect way to declutter as well as always knowing where to find things. Think shoe racks, coat hooks and key cupboards, as well as large items of furniture that can double up as storage such as an Ottoman bed or a coffee table with a second shelf or drawers!
… or storage outside of your home
Storage doesn’t just have to be within your home! If you are finding that all the above still isn’t leaving you with enough space and you have belongings that you don’t need right now, but don’t want to get rid of – how about putting them in to storage? Places such as Bournemouth Self Storage will keep your items safe and secure until you either find space in your home or decide to sell them.
Create the illusion of more space
Alongside creating actual space, you could make a few changes that will create the illusion of space! Light walls, for example, will brighten walls and make them seem larger, adding large mirrors will make rooms look longer or wider, or you could make more of the space you have by removing partitions between rooms to make larger living areas.
Add a conservatory to your home
Conservatories are a relatively quick and easy way to add space to a home, and are far cheaper than building an extension – most of the time they don’t even need planning permission! This will be a lovely addition to your home, providing you with extra space and adding value to your property when you do come to sell it!
When you have finished, and realise how much space you have, you may be surprised that you even considered moving house!
