This is something I really worry about in relation to my girls - I don't want them to see the superficial place we are now without understanding the sacrifices it took to get us here (I don't want to whinge but 18 hour days for 10 years plus no time off perhaps wasn't the right choice looking back)

We didn't have much money when I was growing up, and I am in a position now where I am considerably better off than some of my family and friends. That said, I do know the value of money, through my upbringing and I have always been very proud that I have managed to support myself without debt for the past 13 years since I left home.

It is a difficult subject, money. Although we have it I am still careful with it, I try and do the shopping as carefully as I can. We have nice things but sometimes I feel embarrassed about it. I don't like to flash things in front of other people, and I don't boast about what we do have. My husband loves gadgets but I am always trying to reason with him that we don't need certain things as I think it would be wasteful.

Sorry, this is a rambling comment and I'm not sure it has a point, but I really enjoyed this post anyway.

I was just going to say that Mum at the madhouse had done some great posts lately - I love her 'shop' idea - will totally be stealing it when the little dude's older, because I, am frankly RUBBISH with money because I was never really taught about it, and it's only now, as a 'grown up' I'm learning the importance of squeezing every £ for all it's worth!

We're certainly feeling the pinch of me not going back to work, but it wouldn't be a great deal better if I had gone back (childcare etc.), and I'd be miserable, because I'd hardly see the little dude. So, we 'live within our means' & get creative with belt tightening.

Until the lottery win, anyway :P

So agree with this, is sounds like we have similar idea about money.

A couple of hundred quid here and there is LOADS to us. We only use credit cards for emergencies, we save for everything, our personal spending (after all the bills etc) is virtually zero.

I find it hard when people don't seem to appreciate what they have, how lucky they are to have a bit of spare cash here and there. But it's all relative I guess, if you're used to having more then maybe you do feel a bit deprived.

I grew up with very little money, and looks like Kai will too so I'll be doing exactly the same as my parents. Learning to take care of what you have, learning to save and be patient for the things you really want, and most of all that life isn't about instant gratification. I want isn't good enough - no one has a 'right' to anything, other than having basic needs met. Everything else is a bonus and you appreciate it as such and don't take it for granted.
