Interestingly, this seems to be more engaging than keeping to the word on the page (and I think I'm an engaging reader, using lots of drama when reading) - so yes, a bit of storytelling definitely works! I ued to make up many many Pingu stories when my son was small As long as I have a trting character I'm off. At 5 I tell my son stories of real heroes like the suffragettes or Rosa Parks and baddies like the Sherrif of Nottingham. he loves these!
