Book Review: Toby and the Ice Giants by Joe Lillington

toby and the ice age giantsI’m really excited by this book as its the first children’s book i’ve seen to properly tackle the Ice Ages in an engaging, informative and child friendly manner. The book follows Toby a bison who lives in the Ice Age tundra as he meets a variety of animals that share it with him.

This is a very simple child friendly story suitable for 3 ages upwards and each page has a further column of information about the animal Toby has met. Its a brilliant idea and really works. The addition of facts and a glossary alongside a well considered story makes for a valuable bookshelf addition, especially as prehistory is now an essential part of the National Curriculum.

Alongside the clear educational value of the book is its visual beauty. This is another product of Flying Eye Books who are without doubt the current market leaders for great quality, well produced and thought through children’s books.
