Book Review: Marmaduke the Very Different Dragon by Rachel Valentine and Ed Eaves

Sometimes its quite hard to explain to children about the value of being different and being themselves, but this book does it brilliantly. Marmaduke isn’t like all the other dragons and he doesn’t fit in, Princess Meg is a fun loving princess who doesn’t fit the mould and then one day their lives collide and they become firm friends.

Fifi loved this book and particularly likes the pages where Marmaduke spreads his wings to reveal a lovely surprise. I think she can identify with Princess Meg and I can certainly see her in the character, it could have been based on little Fifi.

This is a useful addition to your bookshelf as it can be used to think about differences and helps to provide a way of talking about individuals and how important it is to be yourself whatever anyone else thinks. I think in that sense, it fills a gap we had on our bookshelf very well and I know I’m going to be bringing it out a lot as my children move through primary school.

If you’d like to see more of Ed Eaves lovely child friendly illustrations have a look at his website here.
